ESA vs PSD

The difference between an ESA and PSD lies in how they provide support to their owners. A PSD does require some training. However, this training can be done at home and there are lots of great training resources available online.

Psychiatric Service Dogs (PSDs) are a type of service animal with the same legal binding rights as all service animals that assist with physical disabilities, they are entitled to the broadest possible range of privileges and rights under federal law. To be eligible for a Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD), you must have a mental health disability/illness (need or concern) that substantially limits one or more major life activities. PSDs are specially trained to assist their owners by performing tasks(actionable) that can help alleviate the individuals with various types of psychological/mental health illnesses and learning disabilities(invisible disabilities) to continue functioning in everyday life.


  • What are PSD's?

Some “example tasks” performed by Psychiatric Service Dogs (PSDs) may include: Navigation and Buffering , Stabilize Routines, Tactile Stimulation and Pressure Therapy, and Interrupt and Redirect to name a few.

  • PSD Rights

    Psychiatric Service Dogs (PSDs) have the same broad public access rights as other types of service dogs. Under The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), state and local governments, businesses, non-profits and other public-serving organizations have to let Psychiatric Service Dogs accompany their owners in all areas where the public is allowed to go. PSD owners additionally have the right to live with their dogs in most types of housing under the Fair Housing Act (FHA). PSD owners “do not” have to pay fees or deposits to housing associations or landlords to have their PSD in their residence. Additionally, under the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) new rules that went into effect on January 11th,2021. PDSs are allowed to fly (in the cabin) with their owners on planes free of charge.
